GOOGLE is a very powerful search engine.  There are literally hundreds of commands at your disposal that can be used to effectively search the internet.  The subject of these advanced “operators” is the subject of many books.  However, there are certain basic operators that are easy to learn and will be most useful in your daily searches.  Since I don’t believe in reinventing the wheel, the excellent guide compiled by Nancy Blachman (as supplemented further by CC) is set forth below, as supplemented by my own research.  There’s lots more at the site www.GoogleGuide.com (not affiliated with or endorsed by Google itself:

Google (and other search engines like Bing)  have  built-in tools like calculators, currency converters, translators and dictionaries.  Just type what you want right in the search box.  If you can’t figure out how to do something, simply use one of the many online tutorials that’ll show you how.

OTHER USEFUL FEATURES:

gmail - quick tip - you can type your address however you like, but gmail ignores caps and dots.  So Joe.Kelly will still be seen as joekelly.

TravelDriving directions: Type query directly in the search box using this format:  “from 123 Main Street, Anywhere to 3456 Broad Street, Somewherelse”.  You’ll get a map showing driving distance, trip time and a link to directions.  For air travel, type in the airport code (e.g. LAX to SRQ) and a listing of flights will appear with drop-down calendars.  For more choices, you can click on the link “flights from Los Angeles to Sarasota”.  To check flight status, use the following format:  “USAir flight status 1234”.  Currency conversion format:  “100 U.S. dollars in French francs”.  Translation tools format: “translate bathroom to Turkish”.  Google Flight Search: Pick start point and destination on the map, then dates, each of which lists prices for that date. And you can further filter by flight length, stops, price, airline and more.   Restaurant reservations:  Many search engine results will include a link to OpenTable, a provider of restaurant reservations.

More advanced data searches with Google Public Data Explorer page: If you type in a topic, it has lots of information about public statistics.  Type in, for example, “unemployment in Florida” and you’ll get a lot of specialized information, not just links and articles.

Nutrition (and other) ComparisonType “compare” then foods or other items to compare, like “apples” and “oranges” and you get the information.

Convert: Any units of measurement, type “convert 8 ounces to cups”

Health Information: The Knowledge Graph nowcontains information about some 400 health issues.  Just type into the search box.

Level:  Type “bubble level” in search box to turn your phone into a level (to hang pictures, etc.)

Define:  Type this before a word and you’ll get the definition.

nGrams:  Lets you search how many times specific words occur in more than 5 million books written between 1800 and the present.  You can filter by time period, language and other items.  You can tell how words get more or less popular over time.

Compare food values:  Type “[food] vs {food] to compare nutritional values (as in “chicken vs beef”)

Google Sky: Like Google Earth for the heavens.  It lets you search for images of stars, planets and galaxies taken from telescopes, probes and satellites, including infrared and microwave images.  There is also a historic map of the stars made by Giovanni Maria Cassini in 1792.

Social Networks: Google Plus lets users share their favorite search results with friends who are also on this service.  Bing goes slightly further:  If you first log onto your Facebook account, then search using Bing, a sidebar appears displaying Facebook friends who may have information related to your search.

Calculator:  Just type in the search box.  You can start with a simple query, which will yield an answer, but below that (in Google, at least) answer, a calculator with more advanced functions will appear.  You can even type in trigonometric functions, that Google will then let you display in a three-dimensional graph.

Google Scholar: A Google app which is specifically designed to search scholarly articles (including patents) or case law about a variety of subjects.  For example, go to https://scholar.google.com and type internet privacy>case law>select courts>New Jersey>Supreme Court to see all case law on the subject of internet privacy.  Cool, huh!
