E-MAIL

TO RETRIEVE YOUR E-MAIL:  CLICK ON YOUR INTERNET EXPLORER internet explorer smallCOMCAST ICON.   IT WILL LOG ON TO THE COMCAST “HOME” PAGE.  ON THE RIGHT, CLICK ON THE “E-MAIL” ICON  (A PICTURE OF AN ENVELOPE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE).  IT WILL TAKE YOU TO THE EMAIL PAGE, WHERE YOU WILL ALREADY BE AT THE XXXXXXXX ACCOUNT (IT SAYS SO UNDER “MY EMAIL ACCOUNTS”.  CLICK ON THE BLUE LINE WHICH SAYS “INBOX (x) UNREAD”. WHEN YOU SEE THE MOUSE ARROW CHANGE TO A “HAND” IT’S TIME TO CLICK.  THIS SENDS YOU TO THE EMAIL PROGRAM ITSELF.  YOU CAN VIEW YOUR MESSAGES, CLICKING ON EACH TO SELECT IT AND THEN READ IT ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE SCREEN.  ALSO, THE TOP MENU BAR (THE GRAY ONE JUST BELOW THE SMARTZONE LOGO) GIVES YOU CHOICES TO GO TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, CALENDAR, VOICE MAIL AND THE LIKE.  IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE GREY BAR IS THE “NEW” BUTTON THAT YOU CAN USE TO SELECT WRITE A NEW MESSAGE TO SOMEONE.  SIMILARLY, IF YOU CLICK ON THE “ADDRESS BOOK” TAB, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE “NEW” TAB CAN BE USED TO CREATE A NEW CONTACT (A NEW ENTRY IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK) WHERE YOU ENTER THE INFORMATION AND THEN CLICK “SAVE” (IN THE SAME PLACE THAT THE “NEW” USED TO BE) IN ORDER TO ADD IT TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK.  TO EDIT AN EXISTING ENTRY, FIND IT ALPHABETICALLY ON ONE OF THE LETTER TABS, THEN CLICK “EDIT” ON THE RIGHT PANEL.  EDIT AND THEN SAVE YOUR CHANGES.

TO SEND MAIL:  GO TO THE SAME WINDOW AS THE RETRIEVE MAIL INSTRUCTIONS, ABOVE.  CLICK ON “NEW,” THEN FILL IN THE E-MAIL MESSAGE FORM, THEN CLICK SEND.  YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE MENU BAR (BELOW THE GREY BAR) NOW HAS OPTIONS TO CANCEL (IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND), ADD AN ATTACHMENT, CHECK SPELLING AND OTHER MORE ADVANCED OPTIONS.  WHEN SENDING MAIL, IF IT’S TO SOMEONE ON YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, CLICK ON THE “TO” BUTTON FIRST.  YOU’LL GET A BOX THAT SAYS “SELECT ADDRESSES”.  ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOX WILL BE ALL OF THE NAMES IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK.  SELECT EACH PERSON IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK THAT YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR E-MAIL TO, THEN CLICK ON THE “TO” BUTTON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOX.  THAT PERSON’S NAME WILL BE ADDED TO THE LIST OF RECIPIENTS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOX.  WHEN YOU’RE DONE, CLICK O.K. AND YOU’LL BE DIRECTED BACK TO COMPLETE YOUR E-MAIL TO THE SELECTED RECIPIENTS.  AFTER YOU CREATE YOUR EMAIL, CLICK “SEND” AND YOUR EMAIL WILL BE SENT.  [THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHER SHORTCUTS, BUT THESE ARE THE BASICS FOR NOW.]

THE INTERNET IN GENERAL

ESSENTIALLY YOU CAN DO ONLY TWO MAJOR THINGS ON THE INTERNET – SEND AND RECEIVE EMAIL AND BROWSE (“SURF”) THE WEB. EMAIL IS UNIQUE BETWEEN THE SENDER AND THE RECIPIENT (E.G. “I’LL SEE YOU FOR LUNCH TOMORROW”) BUT THE WEB IS WHAT WE CALL STATIC, IT’S THE SAME NO MATTER WHO SEES IT (EG. YOU, ME, BILL CLINTON) WHO WILL EACH SEE THE SAME THING IF WE GO TO THE COMPUTER COACH WEBSITE.

EMAIL IS DISTINGUISHABLE BECAUSE IT ALWAYS LOOKS LIKE THIS:  PCUSER@AOL.COM. THE FIRST PART OF THE ADRESS IS THE USER’S NAME (IN YOUR CASE, XXXXXXX).  NEXT AN @ SYMBOL SEPARATES THE USER’S NAME FROM THE COMPUTER THAT RECEIVES MAIL FOR THAT PERSON.  IN YOUR CASE, YOUR EMAIL IS RECEIVED BY COMCAST, SO THE EXTENSION READS “COMCAST.NET).  YOU ARE ASSURED OF RECEIVING YOUR EMAIL BECAUSE, JUST LIKE THERE IS NO OTHER xxxxxxxx AT 5280 HERON WAY, THERE IS NO OTHER XXXXXXXX AT COMCAST.  THERE MAY BE (AND IN FACT, IS) A XXXXXXXX AT GMAIL, BUT THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE AT COMCAST.

A WEBSITE LOOKS LIKE THIS:  HTTP://WWW.THECOMPUTERCOACH.NET.  THE HTTP:// HAS TO DO WITH THE LANGUAGE NORMALLY USED TO DISPLAY THE PAGE ON THE INTERNET.  THE WWW STANDS FOR THE “WORLD WIDE WEB,” WHICH IS WHERE MOST OF THE COMMERCIAL WEB PAGES RESIDE ON THE INTERNET.  AND “THECOMPUTERCOACH.NET” IS THE ACTUAL ADDRESS ASSIGNED TO COMPUTER COACH.  NOONE ELSE CAN HAVE THIS DESIGNATION, JUST LIKE NOONE ELSE CAN HAVE YOUR EXACT EMAIL ADDRESS.

WINDOWS IN GENERAL

WINDOWS IS THE OPERATING SYSTEM ON YOUR COMPUTER.  IT’S WHAT MAKES THAT SHINY BLACK, OR SILVER, OR PUTTY-COLORED MACHINE ON YOUR DESK KNOW THAT IT’S A COMPUTER AND THAT IT’S READY TO DO SOMETHING FOR YOU (SUCH AS GET ON THE INTERNET, RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL, WRITE A LETTER OR KEEP YOUR CHECKBOOK).  SOFTWARE IS ESSENTIALLY A LIST OF “INSTRUCTIONS” WRITTEN IN A COMPUTER “LANGUAGE” TELLING YOUR COMPUTER WHAT TO DO UNDER VARIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES.  YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM IS WINDOWS 7 AND IT IS FROM MICROSOFT CORPORATION.  WHILE YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM, YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT, WHILE IT DOESN’T PERFORM ANY OF THE PARTICULAR TASKS DISCUSSED ABOVE, IT DOES CONTROL HOW THEY ARE PERFORMED.  IT CONTROLS THE COLORS ON THE SCREEN, THE TYPE FROM THE KEYBOARD, HOW LARGE OR SMALL THINGS LOOK, SOUNDS AND OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR COMPUTER EXPERIENCE.  THE OTHER SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER IS “APPLICATION” SOFTWARE (WHAT MANY PEOPLE SIMPLY CALL “PROGRAMS”), SO NAMED BECAUSE THIS TYPE OF SOFTWARE MAKES THE COMPUTER “APPLY” ITSELF TO WRITE OR PRINT TEXT, CONNECT TO THE INTERNET/SEND EMAIL, KEEP A CHECKBOOK, DRAW A PICTURE AND THE LIKE.

VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING IN WINDOWS IS DISPLAYED IN WHAT IS CALLED A “WINDOW”.  THERE ARE COMMON ELEMENTS TO EACH WINDOW THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT TO OPERATE A COMPUTER.  NORMALLY, TO START A PROGRAM AND OPEN A WINDOW, YOU (LEFT) DOUBLE-CLICK ON AN ICON.  THE WINDOW WHICH YOU SEE NEXT WILL HAVE A BLUE “BAR” ACROSS THE TOP, STATING THE NAME OF THE PROGRAM AND, SOMETIMES, WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON (E.G. WORDPAD [SHOPPING LIST]).  IMMEDIATELY BELOW THIS “PROGRAM BAR” WILL BE A TEXT MENU, STARTING WITH “FILE” ON THE LEFT AND ENDING WITH “HELP” ON THE RIGHT.  THE OTHER TEXT WILL VARY WITH THE TYPE OF PROGRAM.  CLICKING ON EACH OF THE WORDS WILL RESULT IN A DROP-DOWN MENU WITH MORE CHOICES, AND EVEN LEFT OR RIGHT “FLY-OUT MENUS WITH MORE CHOICES.  DEPENDING ON THE PROGRAM, THERE MAY BE GRAPHIC” BUTTONS BELOW THE MENU BAR DEPICTING THE MOST COMMON TASKS ON THE SERIES OF ENGLISH MENUS (COMMONLY PRINTING, SAVING, MAKING THINGS BOLD, CENTERING TEXT, ETC.)  IT’S VERY MUCH LIKE THE OUTLINES THAT YOU WERE PROBABLY TAUGHT TO USE IN SCHOOL.  THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE WINDOW ARE THREE ICONS ON THE TOP RIGHT OF THE WINDOW. THE FAR RIGHT LITTLE ICON IS AN “X”.  CLICKING THIS X WILL CLOSE THE PROGRAM.  THE ICON IN THE CENTER OF THE THREE WILL EITHER DISPLAY THE WINDOW AS A FULL PAGE (EASIER TO WORK WITH) OR LESS THAN A FULL PAGE (USEFUL IF YOU HAVE MANY WINDOWS OPEN AT THE SAME TIME).  THE FAR LEFT ICON THAT LOOKS LIKE A LINE WILL TAKE THE WINDOW OFF THE PAGE ENTIRELY, BUT KEEP THE PROGRAM OPEN SO THAT YOU CAN CLICK ON ITS DESCRIPTION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN (THE “TASK BAR”) TO USE IT AGAIN WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS OF OPENING UP THE PROGRAM ALL OVER AGAIN.

THIS IS JUST SCRATCHING THE SURFACE, BUT SHOULD PROVIDE BASIC KNOWLEDGE TO GET GOING.  JUST REMEMBER TWO THINGS:  FIRST, IF YOU CREATE SOMETHING OF YOUR OWN, YOU MUST SAVE IT ON YOUR COMPUTER OR IT WILL NOT BE THERE THE NEXT TIME YOU LOOK FOR IT.  THIS ASSUMES THAT YOU KNOW WHERE TO SAVE IT SO THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FIND IT AGAIN.  SECOND, IT IS REALLY, REALLY DIFFICULT TO MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER BEYOND REPAIR.  USUALLY, IF YOU’RE PLAYING WITH A PROGRAM, IT’LL ALWAYS GIVE YOU THE CHOICE TO EXIT THE PROGRAM WITHOUT SAVING YOUR MESS, AND YOU’LL BE BACK WHERE YOU STARTED.  AND IF YOU CHANGE A SETTING, MOST COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS CAN GET YOU BACK WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.
