“Get a Personal Trainer for Your Computer!”©

GENERAL COMPUTER INFORMATION:

I

YOUR COMPUTER IS A “P.C.” THIS MEANS AN “IBM-TYPE” PERSONAL COMPUTER.  THIS DISTINGUISHES IT FROM THE OTHER MAJOR TYPE OF COMPUTER, THE “APPLE”

YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM IS “WINDOWS XP” [THINK “BILL GATES”]  THE ONLY THING THE OPERATING SYSTEM DOES IS TO TURN YOUR COMPUTER ON.  IT MAKES THE SCREEN LIGHT UP, THE KEYBOARD WORK, THE MOUSE WORK, ETC.

II

NOW THAT THE COMPUTER IS WORKING, THAT IS, THE WINDOWS XP OPERATING SYSTEM IS LETTING IT OPERATE, YOU WANT TO DO SOME WORK ON YOUR COMPUTER.  FOR THAT, YOU NEED PROGRAMS.  THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PROGRAMS AVAILABLE.  RIGHT NOW, YOU HAVE A FEW OF THE FOLLOWING:

MICROSOFT WORD:  LETS YOU WRITE AND PRINT LETTERS AND OTHER TEXT.

MICROSOFT EXCEL:  LETS YOU VIEW AND CREATE SPREADSHEETS.

MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER:  LETS YOU BROWSE THE INTERNET, I.E. CONNECT TO VARIOUS OTHER COMPUTERS TO SHARE INFORMATION ON THEM (SHOP, CHECK AIRLINE SCHEDULES, ETC).

MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS:  LETS YOU SEND AND RECEIVE E-MAIL BETWEEN COMPUTERS.

III

EACH AND EVERY PROGRAM HAS A WINDOW THAT HAS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME ELEMENTS.  THAT WAY, IF YOU INSTALL A NEW PROGRAM, YOU WILL ALREADY KNOW HOW TO GET AROUND IN IT, EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T EVER SEEN IT BEFORE!  YOU’LL SEE THE FOLLOWING SIMILARITIES:

THE TOP “BLUE” BAR IS THE PROGRAM BAR – IT TELLS YOU THE NAME OF THE PROGRAM YOU ARE USING; SOMETIMES EVEN THE DOCUMENT YOU ARE LOOKING AT (E.G. THE LETTER NAME OR SPREADSHEET NAME)

IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE PROGRAM BAR, THE “MENU” BAR, WHICH ALWAYS STARTS WITH THE WORD FILE AND ENDS WITH THE WORD HELP AND WHICH DISPLAY “DROP DOWN” MENUS WHEN CLICKED WITH YOUR MOUSE (LEFT BUTTON)

BELOW THE MENU BAR WILL BE A SERIES OF BUTTONS WHICH VARY IN NUMBER, BUT WHICH ARE “SHORTCUTS” TO THE MOST COMMON FEATURES IN THE DROP DOWN MENUS, ABOVE.  MOVING YOUR MOUSE OVER THE BUTTONS WILL DISPLAY THEIR FUNCTION (E.G. BOLD, UNDERLINE)

AT THE TOP LEFT OF THE WINDOW, THERE ARE THREE SMALL BOXES; THE RED “X”, WHEN CLICKED, WILL CLOSE THE PROGRAM (PROMPTING YOU TO SAVE ANY WORK YOU MAY HAVE CREATED, IF YOU SO DESIRE); THE MIDDLE BOX WILL ALLOW YOU, WHEN CLICKED, TO HAVE THE DISPLAY TAKE UP THE ENTIRE SCREEN OR ONLY ABOUT HALF OF THE SCREEN; AND THE FAR LEFT BOX (LOOKS LIKE A LINE), WHEN CLICKED, LETS YOU TAKE THE PROGRAM OFF THE SCREEN ENTIRELY, BUT DOES NOT CLOSE THE PROGRAM.  IT REMAINS OPEN UNTIL YOU CLICK ON IT’S DESCRIPTION ON THE BOTTOM BAR OF YOUR COMPUTER, WHICH BRINGS IT TO LIFE AGAIN.
